Assam Takes Action Against Bengal Man’s Derogatory Remarks on Goddess Kamakhya
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has requested the assistance of the West Bengal government to secure the custody of Wajahat Khan, who faces allegations of making derogatory comments about Kamakhya Devi, a highly revered deity in Hinduism. Speaking to the media, CM Sarma announced, “A case has been registered by Assam Police in response to the offensive remarks made against Devi Maa Kamakhya. We will be seeking the cooperation of the West Bengal Government to ensure the concerned individual is brought to Assam to face the law.”
The controversy centers around Khan, a Kolkata-based individual, who reportedly made inflammatory statements on social media regarding Hindu beliefs and deities. His remarks emerged on June 1 and have incited public outrage, leading to complaints from various religious organizations and citizens across multiple states.
Reports indicate that Khan, who is affiliated with the Rashidi Foundation, had previously filed a complaint against law student and social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli. This complaint resulted in Panoli’s arrest in Gurugram for a video in which she used explicit language to critique several public figures and address issues of selective outrage. Her arrest faced backlash from numerous political leaders, particularly from the BJP, who questioned the validity of the FIR.
After Khan’s complaint, his own social media posts drew scrutiny. Many users and community organizations pointed out that some of Khan’s statements were deemed offensive to Hinduism. Notably, one of his posts referenced the Kamakhya temple in a manner considered disrespectful and blasphemous.
Meanwhile, Khan’s family has reported that he has been missing since the night of June 1. His father, Saadat Khan, mentioned in an interview with Aaj Tak that the family has received threats since Panoli’s arrest. He denied any wrongdoing on his son’s part and suggested that Khan’s social media account might have been hacked, attributing his son’s distress to abusive and threatening calls received in the days following the incident.
As the situation develops, the Kolkata Police have not yet made any formal arrests. A complaint against Khan was lodged by the Shree Ram Swabhiman Parishad, accusing him of fostering communal discord and insulting religious sentiments.
