India and Maldives Bolster Ties Through Substantial Cooperation Initiatives
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasized India’s unwavering commitment to partnering with the Maldives for mutual welfare and interests during his visit to the archipelago nation. In a joint press conference with Maldivian Foreign Affairs Minister Moosa Zameer, Dr. Jaishankar characterized the Maldives as a pivotal element of India’s Neighbourhood First Policy.
Dr. Jaishankar revealed that their discussions in Male were highly productive, covering key areas such as development partnership, capacity building, bilateral and regional security, trade, and digital cooperation. Highlighting the tangible outcomes of their engagement, the two leaders inaugurated six High Impact Community Development Projects. These projects span various sectors, including street lighting, mental health, children’s speech therapy, and special education.
Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Maldives. This agreement aims to introduce a digital payment system in the Maldives, further strengthening economic ties between the two nations.
Maldivian Foreign Affairs Minister Moosa Zameer lauded the meeting as a significant milestone in India’s commitment to empowering Maldivian communities. Dr. Jaishankar’s visit is seen as instrumental in resetting and enhancing bilateral relations, following the recent visit of President Mohamed Muizzu to India for the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
Dr. Jaishankar’s three-day official visit underscores the continued emphasis on reinforcing Indo-Maldivian relations through concrete actions and collaborative initiatives.
