Defending Thirukkural: Governor Stands Firm Against Ideological Pressure, Upholding Its Spiritual Essence
Governor R.N. Ravi laid the foundation stone for the construction of the rajagopuram and prahara mandapam at the Sri Prasanna Venkatachalapathy Temple in Gunaseelam, Tiruchi district, on Friday. At the event, he emphasized the enduring spiritual significance of the Thirukkural, asserting that this revered text of Sanatana Dharma cannot be "de-spiritualised" by any political ideology.
Ravi described Thiruvalluvar as a pivotal figure within Sanatana Dharma, highlighting how his work represents a harmonious blend of dharma and ethics. He noted that the Thirukkural encompasses themes of devotion, renunciation, and compassion, essential to understanding India’s cultural fabric. Following the foundation stone unveiling, he also released two books: Gunaseelam Mahathmiyam, written by K.R. Pichumani Iyengar, and Valluvathil Meignanam by Sennakarai Subramanian.
The Governor articulated that Sanatana Dharma is not confined to a select group or geographical area; rather, it is a universal doctrine that embraces all forms of life, including humans, animals, and plants. He stated, “Bharat has been a dharma rashtra for thousands of years, grounded in the fundamental values of Sanatana Dharma. No other nation can replicate our uniqueness.” He acknowledged the existence of many religions but insisted there is only one true dharma, which is inclusive of all.
Ravi affirmed the inseparable connection between Bharat and dharma, declaring, “We cannot imagine Bharat without dharma.” He stressed that both the nation and its spiritual foundation have endured considerable hardships due to foreign invasions but are now witnessing a resurgence. He linked the identity of Bharat directly to its commitment to Sanatana Dharma, noting that divine souls have appeared historically to rectify societal distortions.
Temples, he emphasized, have acted as crucial societal anchors, resolving crises during times of peace and distress alike. They have long served as centers of spiritual education. Critically, Ravi lamented, “In the name of fraudulent secularism, our children and students have been deprived of the opportunity to understand who we are.”
The event was also attended by Sri Yathiraja Narayana Ramanuja Jeeyar, the 41st Peetadhipathi of Yadugiri Yathiraja Mutt. Ravi’s remarks spotlight the ongoing discourse around the relevance of traditional spiritual values in contemporary society, positioning Sanatana Dharma as a vital part of India’s identity and cultural continuity.
As discussions around dharma and national identity gain traction, Ravi’s statements are likely to resonate with many who view the connection between spirituality and community as foundational to India’s heritage and future.
