In a significant advancement for India’s defense capabilities, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the “execution model” for the development of India’s fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). This project aims to enhance India’s air power, particularly in light of growing military developments by neighboring countries like China.
India’s Rafale jets, along with international counterparts such as the US-F16s, gained attention after the recent Operation Sindoor, where they reportedly targeted terrorist camps in Pakistan. This operation raised questions globally about the capabilities of fifth-generation fighter jets and their potential to evade advanced air defense systems like Russia’s S-400. Many are curious about the distinctions among various fighter jet generations, including the 4th, 4.5th, and 5th generations.
Fourth-generation fighter jets are characterized as lightweight and fast, often equipped with basic radar systems and primarily used in low-intensity missile combat. On the other hand, 4.5th generation jets, such as the Rafale, possess improved engines, stealth features, and advanced sensors. Fifth-generation fighter jets integrate cutting-edge technology including stealth capabilities, supersonic cruise, artificial intelligence, and multi-sensor data fusion, making them the most advanced military aircraft to date.
The Rafale, specifically, is recognized as a 4.5th generation French fighter jet in the Indian Air Force. It boasts advanced stealth technology, sophisticated missile systems, a top speed of 1,912 km/h, and an operational range of 3,700 km. Meanwhile, China is reportedly developing a sixth-generation fighter known as the J-36.
The approval of the execution model for the AMCA underscores India’s commitment to establishing a robust indigenous defense manufacturing program. Designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in collaboration with industry partners, the AMCA is set to become a cornerstone of the Indian Air Force alongside the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft.
This progression comes amid heightened focus on strengthening India’s air capabilities in response to rapid advancements by China in military aviation. With this move, India aims to bolster its strategic defense posture and ensure readiness in an increasingly competitive regional security environment.
