Chotomamda Model Hospital in Silchar, located in Cachar district, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing its first Caesarean Section (C-section). This makes it the second rural hospital in the district to offer emergency obstetric care, a crucial service for maternal health. This accomplishment was spotlighted during a review meeting of the district health society held at the Cachar district commissioner’s office on Tuesday. Previously, the Katigorah Model Hospital was the first to provide C-section services in the district, having introduced them in 2017.
Assam’s Minister for Barak Valley Development, Kaushik Rai, praised this advancement, describing it as “a triumph for equitable healthcare.” He emphasized that this achievement transcends mere medical success, representing a critical step towards ensuring that every mother, irrespective of her geographic location, receives the safety and dignity she deserves during childbirth. Minister Rai reiterated the state government’s commitment to reinforcing rural healthcare infrastructure and highlighted the necessity for collaboration between state and district health authorities.
He urged health officials to expedite the operationalization of various healthcare centers currently under construction under the National Health Mission and the Public Works Department. “Timely commissioning of these facilities is essential for comprehensive healthcare access, especially in remote rural and tea garden regions,” Rai stated. Additionally, the minister called for targeted welfare measures for tea garden communities, instructing health officials to ensure the effective implementation of the tea garden wage compensation scheme. “No pregnant woman in tea garden areas should miss out on this vital support system,” he added, underlining the importance of this scheme in enhancing maternal health among economically vulnerable populations.
