KAAC Chief Confirms No Houses Will Be Affected by Tharakunchi Hydel Project
Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, confirmed that the upcoming hydropower project in Tharakunchi, West Karbi Anglong will not result in the demolition of any houses. This assurance was made during a public meeting at the Tharakunchi LP School playground, where Ronghang outlined plans for a water tank to be built within a Council Proposed Reserve Forest (PRF).
Ronghang stated, “This forest land will be converted to revenue land following consultation with the KAAC executive committee. Land pattas will also be issued to those who currently do not have legal titles.” He explained that the project will draw water from the Killing River, store it in a tank, and release it at night to generate electricity.
A detailed survey for the project is presently underway and is anticipated to take about a year to complete. The findings will lead to the establishment of a joint venture involving KAAC, the state government, Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), and Green Co. Pvt. Ltd., contingent on a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). “The project’s execution will depend on the survey’s outcome and the terms of the MoU,” the CEM added.
Once approved, the hydropower project is expected to take five years to complete. During the construction phase, approximately 2,500 workers will be hired, with a focus on employing local youth. Upon completion, it is projected to provide permanent jobs for about 300 individuals.
Rajib Kumar Sawarn, Vice President of Green Co. Pvt. Ltd., described the initiative as one of the first in Assam to employ new hydropower technology. He remarked, “Karbi Anglong is taking a pioneering step in embracing this technology. This project promises significant development and prosperity for the region.”
Officials from Green Co. and APDCL were also present, where they briefed KAAC representatives and community members on various technical and developmental aspects of the project.
