Conflict Erupts as Police Clash with Protesters in Manipur: 7 Women Injured
Seven women were injured while attempting to submit a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur, protesting the removal of the word “Manipur” from a government bus. According to reports, the protesters faced police resistance, leading to clashes during the demonstration. Several participants were injured due to tear gas and rubber bullets fired by the police.
The protest was organized by the Coordination Committee on Manipur’s Integrity (COCOMI) in response to the government’s decision to remove the word “Manipur” from public transport vehicles on May 20.
On the following Monday, members of the committee were scheduled to meet with the Governor to present their memorandum. However, they alleged that police blocked their path as soon as they arrived at the Raj Bhavan premises, resulting in conflicts with law enforcement.
The unrest had begun on May 20, the same day several journalists were heading to an inauguration event. They were traveling in a government bus when a group of security personnel reportedly stopped their vehicle, instructing them to remove the reference to “Manipur.”
In response to these events, the All Manipur Journalist Union and the Editor’s Guild Manipur sent a letter to the Governor expressing their concerns. The government has also formed a two-member inquiry committee to investigate the situation. Unfortunately, amidst the ongoing protests, seven women demonstrators were reported to be injured.
