Embracing Unity: Manipur Speaker Advocates Eco-Tourism at Shirui Lily Festival
Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh attended the 5th State Level Shirui Lily Festival on Friday, emphasizing its significance in promoting peace, cultural identity, and eco-tourism in the state. Speaking from Shirui village in the Ukhrul district, Singh underscored the festival’s role in fostering community unity and highlighting Manipur’s natural beauty.
His presence on the festival’s third day showcased official support for the event, which has attracted substantial public participation, including diverse tribal communities. This year’s festival marked a welcome return after a two-year hiatus and celebrates the Shirui Lily (Lilium mackliniae), a rare flower indigenous to the unique microclimate of the Shirui Hills.
Earlier this week, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla inaugurated the festival, calling the Shirui Lily “a living symbol of Manipur’s ecological wealth.” He stressed the importance of developing the region into a prominent eco-tourism hub, highlighting the necessity for improved infrastructure and a streamlined government approach.
The four-day festival commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Shirui Lily’s discovery, featuring an array of cultural performances, local crafts, traditional cuisine, and music from the Tangkhul Naga community. It aims to promote sustainable tourism and encourage peace and harmony, especially in light of recent challenges in the area.
As the festival unfolds, state leaders are leveraging the event to advocate for unity and an enhanced focus on preserving both the cultural and ecological identity of Manipur.
