Joaquin Phoenix Moves Audience to Tears with Cannes Ovation
Hollywood star Joaquin Phoenix garnered a warm reception from audiences during the screening of his film “Eddington” at the Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Ari Aster, “Eddington” is a contemporary Western film set during the Covid era.
The film also features Emma Stone, Austin Butler, and Pedro Pascal, and received a five-minute standing ovation at its premiere on Friday, as reported by Variety. However, some audience members appeared disengaged, with at least 20 individuals leaving the screening early.
According to Variety, many in the upper seating areas departed as the credits rolled. Aster, typically self-deprecating, expressed his gratitude after the screening, saying, “I don’t know what to say. I don’t know what you think. Sorry, I guess? Thank you, I guess?” He added, “I feel very privileged to be here. This is a dream come true. Thank you so much for having me.” As detailed in the official synopsis, the A24 film, set in May 2020, portrays “a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor,” leading to tensions as “a neighbor is pitted against a neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.” The cast also includes Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr.
“Eddington” serves as Aster’s follow-up to “Beau Is Afraid,” released in 2023, where Phoenix played a paranoid man on a surreal journey to attend his mother’s funeral while confronting his greatest fears. Despite generally positive reviews from critics, “Beau Is Afraid” struggled at the box office, earning only $11 million. Following its Cannes premiere, “Eddington” is slated for a theatrical release on July 18. This marks Aster’s first appearance at the festival; his debut feature, the horror hit “Hereditary,” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018. Both “Midsommar,” his critically acclaimed follow-up featuring Florence Pugh, and “Beau Is Afraid” bypassed the festival circuit and went directly to theaters. Aster’s cast is more familiar with Cannes, with Phoenix winning the Best Actor award in 2017 for “You Were Never Really Here,” and Stone having attended last year with “Kinds of Kindness” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
