Tribute to CRPF Hero Lost to Lightning in Jharkhand’s Operations
Imphal, May 17 (IANS) Local residents, family members, and senior officials gathered in Manipur on Saturday to pay a heartfelt tribute to CRPF officer Maharabam Prabo Singh, who tragically lost his life on May 15 while serving in an anti-Maoist operation in Jharkhand. The officer’s mortal remains arrived at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport on Saturday afternoon. Kuldiep Singh, the Security Advisor to the Manipur government and former Director General of CRPF, was present at a wreath-laying ceremony, where he, along with other officials and legislators, honored the fallen officer.
Following the ceremony at the airport, Singh’s remains were transported to his home in Sekmai, located in Imphal West district, where his last rites were conducted with full military honors. R. Duidang, the CRPF DIG for Manipur and Nagaland Sector, emphasized the sacrifice of Singh, who was 46 years old and had joined the CRPF in 2006. He described Singh as a dedicated and efficient officer whose bravery would not be forgotten.
Singh’s life was cut short in the Saranda forests of Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district during a coordinated operation led by the 26th Battalion of CRPF. He was fatally struck by lightning, marking a rare and tragic occurrence as it is reported to be the first lightning-related death of a commandant-rank officer in this Maoist-affected area.
In a statement shared on social media, the CRPF extended their condolences, remarking, “The CRPF offers heartfelt tributes to the brave officer who laid down his life in the line of duty under such unfortunate circumstances. In this moment of profound grief, the entire force stands in solidarity with the bereaved family.” Singh passed away before reaching the hospital after the incident. Three others sustained injuries, including CRPF Assistant Commandant Subir Kumar Mandal from West Bengal and local Jharkhand Police Assistant Sub-Inspectors Chandlal Hansda and Suresh Bhagat, who are currently receiving medical treatment.
