Urgent Alert: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Warns of Looming Militant Resurgence in Bangladesh
Assam CM Warns of Renewed Insurgence Risk Due to Unrest in Bangladesh
Guwahati – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday expressed concerns over the escalating unrest in Bangladesh, highlighting the potential for the neighboring country to once again become a sanctuary for insurgent groups from the northeastern region of India. He also flagged the risk of a rise in illegal immigration due to the instability.
Sarma stated, "We are confident that the issues concerning the northeast will be effectively managed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and with the formation of the new government in Bangladesh. The country will not revert to being a safe haven for insurgents."
He credited the previous Bangladeshi administration, under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, for successfully cooperating in driving out northeastern insurgents from Bangladesh, thereby reducing militant activities in the region. His concerns are rooted in historical precedence and a commitment to avoiding the resurgence of past challenges that have previously troubled northeastern India.
Bangladesh Instability and Leadership Changes
In parallel developments, significant political turbulence has been reported in Bangladesh. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned amidst severe violence and widespread protests. Army Chief General Waker-Us-Zaman has announced the formation of an interim government. Thousands of protestors celebrated in Dhaka, even storming Hasina’s official residence. The unrest initially triggered by a controversial quota in government jobs led to deadly clashes.
Reports indicate that Hasina has already left for London after a brief stay in India, where she met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The ongoing civil unrest in Bangladesh has witnessed over 300 fatalities and numerous arrests, prompting urgent discussions about the country’s immediate political future.
Conclusion
The evolving situation in Bangladesh presents substantial risks to regional stability, particularly for neighboring northeastern India. The vigilant and coordinated approach between Indian leadership and any new government formed in Bangladesh will be crucial in preventing a relapse into turbulence and insurgency.
