Heartwarming Rescue: 130 IDPs Safely Relocated After Devastating Flash Flood
Flash Flood Displaces 130 IDPs in Manipur’s Bishnupur District
IMPHAL: A sudden flash flood on Wednesday devastated pre-fabricated housing at Kwakta Sericulture Farm in Bishnupur district, Manipur, displacing 130 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from 30 families. Triggered by heavy rainfall and water cascading down from Thangjing hills, the flood broke through a concrete wall at the Moirang River, resulting in significant damage and upheaval for the affected residents.
The torrential downpour breached the river’s concrete defenses, allowing floodwaters to inundate the temporary housing located in low-lying areas. The Moirang River, the sole upstream river in Manipur, played a pivotal role in the flooding. The deluge, which struck between 5:30 am and 9 am, caused severe damage to belongings, including books, household items, and Rs 40,000 in cash. Fortunately, the waters receded quickly.
Local MLA Thongam Shanti addressed the state assembly during the zero hour on Wednesday, highlighting the plight of the affected families. Comprising mostly women and children from the Churachandpur district, these families have been relocated to safer areas. Shanti also mentioned that the state government had cleaned the Moirang riverbed from Thangjing hills to Moirang bazaar—a stretch of approximately 35 kilometers—seven months prior to this disaster.
Despite these efforts, the unexpected flash flood has underlined the community’s vulnerability to extreme weather events and the pressing need for more robust flood control measures.
