Vice President Dhankhar Praises Meghalaya’s Economic Progress
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has commended Meghalaya’s significant economic progress, notably a 13 percent year-on-year increase in the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). Speaking to self-help group members from Garo Hills, Khasi Hills, and Jaintia Hills in New Delhi, he emphasized Meghalaya’s potential to evolve into a USD 10 billion economy by 2028. Dhankhar praised the state’s advancements under the Act East policy, recognizing opportunities in tourism, mining, information technology, and various services. He labelled the northeastern region as the “jewel” of India, recalling the Government of India’s “Look East” initiative from the 1990s, which has since expanded under Prime Minister Narendra Modi into the “Act East” policy. “Meghalaya is heaven for tourists, a bountiful gift of nature,” he stated.
The Vice President also touched on the true essence of empowerment, arguing that mere financial aid does not constitute real empowerment. “True empowerment is when you guide individuals to achieve self-sufficiency. This fosters joy, satisfaction, and inner strength, making families proud,” he said. He celebrated a decade of governance reforms under Modi, attributing the nation’s advancements to visionary leadership that encourages officials to take action. “Our country has achieved remarkable milestones in economy, infrastructure, technology, and women’s empowerment over the last ten years,” he noted, affirming the richness of tribal culture in Meghalaya.
Commenting on the state’s economic trajectory, Dhankhar congratulated Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for his commitment, noting that the state has achieved an impressive GSDP of over 66,000 crores. “Meghalaya may not be geographically vast, but its economic aspirations are substantial. The target of a USD 10 billion economy by 2028 is commendable,” he added.
Dhankhar stressed the importance of inclusive development, particularly highlighting the role of women in the economy. He noted a tenfold increase in revolving fund support for self-help groups, underscoring that nurturing human resources is crucial for societal and economic growth. “The state is rich in talent and resources but must ensure that human resources are developed independently. Societal progress is balanced when women are empowered,” he expressed, reflecting his delight at the substantial increase in support for these groups. Chief Minister Sangma and other dignitaries were present at the interaction, showcasing a united front for Meghalaya’s future ambitions.
