Each day, hundreds of hopefuls arrive in Mumbai dreaming of stardom in the film industry. While some come with connections or wealth, many depend solely on unwavering belief and determination. The glamorous exterior of Bollywood often masks the challenges behind it, including rejection, self-doubt, and long periods of waiting that newcomers frequently face.
One inspiring tale amidst these dreams is that of Shyam Pathak, better known as ‘Popatlal’ from the beloved sitcom ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.’ Shyam’s journey began in childhood, where his deep passion for acting was often met with ridicule. Instead of encouragement, he faced pressure to focus on academics and pursue a stable career. Eventually, he found himself enrolled in a Chartered Accountancy course, even embarking on his articleship.
To manage his living expenses, Shyam took on several odd jobs during his studies, including working as a salesman in a clothing store. To honor his mother’s wishes, he completed five years of college, cleared his Chartered Accountancy exams, and began his articleship—yet his dream of acting lingered.
Between auditing for an IT firm and chasing his ambitions, he often dreamed of visiting the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). One day, he took a trip there and enrolled in a 15-day theatre workshop, paying a modest subscription fee of Rs 25, which was a significant expense for him. Despite his financial constraints, he immersed himself in learning, spending weekends attending plays and even securing permission to watch from backstage.
Shyam’s breakthrough came when he applied to the National School of Drama (NSD). After several rounds of evaluations, he was invited to Delhi for a final workshop. It was here that he first saw his name on the selection list, marking a pivotal moment in his career. He went on to work in notable productions such as ‘Sonpari’ and ‘Jasuben Jayantilaal Joshi Ki Joint Family’, slowly building a stable footing in the industry.
However, true success greeted him in 2008 when he was cast in ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’. His portrayal of Patrakar Popatlal and his iconic line “Duniya Hila Dunga” endeared him to Indian families across the nation. Behind his humor and exceptional acting lies a story of relentless dedication and silent sacrifices. From selling clothes to becoming one of the most recognizable faces on Indian television, Shyam’s journey illustrates that with determination, dreams can indeed become reality.
