Unprecedented Deluge: Guwahati’s Heaviest Rainfall of the Year Disrupts Daily Life
Guwahati experienced its heaviest single-day rainfall of the year on Monday, recording 78.4 mm between 8:30 am Monday to 8:30 am Tuesday, according to the Regional Meteorological Center. The intense downpour caused significant disruptions, paralyzing city life until after midnight.
In response, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma convened a high-level meeting to devise a comprehensive flood management plan incorporating early warning and quick response mechanisms. He also announced coordination with the Meghalaya government to establish a real-time communication protocol, noting that Ri-Bhoi district in Meghalaya received nearly 100 mm of rain on Monday, exacerbating the flood situation in Guwahati.
Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal has called for an urgent meeting with officials to discuss the flood crisis. The Kamrup Metropolitan’s District Commissioner (DC), who also oversees the mission for a flood-free Guwahati, was asked to submit a thorough report by Wednesday. This report will be scrutinized to determine the specific causes of the flooding and to identify potential lapses in government response.
Across the region, other cities have faced similar challenges with unprecedented rainfall. Goa recorded its highest-ever rainfall in July, and Lahore witnessed severe flooding due to record-breaking rainfall, disrupting daily life and causing numerous casualties.
This reflects a broader pattern of extreme weather affecting various regions, overwhelming drainage systems, and necessitating urgent intergovernmental and local responses to mitigate the impact on residents and infrastructure.
