
India’s Precision Guided Long Range Weapons: Unmatched Power and Precision in Defense
The Indian Armed Forces conducted Operation Sindoor in the early hours of May 6-7, targeting terrorist facilities as a response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed several lives. Although specifics about the weaponry used have not been disclosed, the operation reportedly involved precise strikes across nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, resulting in the destruction of 21 terror camps.
During a recent media briefing, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh from the Indian Air Force highlighted that the military utilized advanced niche-technology weapons equipped with carefully chosen warheads to mitigate potential collateral damage. This significant operation underscores India’s ongoing efforts to enhance its military capabilities through the acquisition of state-of-the-art weaponry, including a range of long-range, precision-guided munitions.
Among these advanced systems are the Highly Agile and Manoeuvrable Munition Extended Range (HAMMER), an air-to-ground precision-guided missile adaptable for Rafale fighter jets, boasting a reach of up to 70 kilometers. Developed by the French aerospace firm Safran, HAMMER allows for accurate targeting during tactical operations.
Another key asset is the SCALP-EG/Storm Shadow, a stealthy air-launched cruise missile engineered by MBDA, which excels in deep strikes under various conditions, with a striking distance of 450 kilometers. Its low-flying capabilities make it especially challenging to detect.
Additionally, the Meteor missile represents the next generation of Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missiles, also produced by MBDA. Its solid-fuel ramjet motor ensures sustained thrust throughout its trajectory, establishing a formidable “no-escape zone” for adversaries, especially in electronically contested environments.
The BrahMos, a product of the India-Russia joint venture BrahMos Aerospace, exemplifies cutting-edge military technology with its supersonic cruise speed nearing Mach 3. This missile can traverse various flights paths and is equipped with a fire-and-forget system, able to strike from altitudes ranging from 10 meters to 15 kilometers while carrying a conventional warhead weighing between 200 and 300 kilograms.
Moreover, the Indian military has recently expanded its arsenal to include innovative loitering munitions, capable of conducting surveillance, identifying targets, and executing precision strikes, with certain models featuring autonomous capabilities.
Operative actions like Operation Sindoor not only emphasize India’s strategic military advancements but also its commitment to maintaining national security through precise and effective military actions.
