Pakistan’s Frantic Disinformation Campaign Follows India’s Triumph in ‘Operation Sindoor’
In the wake of India’s successful military operation, Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has launched a coordinated disinformation campaign designed to divert attention from the operation’s impact and recast the narrative using fake news, manipulated images, and misleading claims. The response from Pakistani sources, including social media influencers and political figures, is marked by the propagation of baseless stories that falsely claim military victories and retaliations.
This disinformation strategy utilizes a range of tactics, such as repackaging old images, misrepresenting videos, and fabricating incidents to create confusion within the information landscape. Such efforts are aimed at distorting facts and manipulating public perceptions not just in Pakistan, but across the region.
Among the key instances of misinformation is a viral image misattributing the downing of a Rafale jet near Bahawalpur. This image, touted by pro-Pakistan accounts, actually originates from a 2021 MiG-21 crash in Moga, Punjab, a fact that has been confirmed by PIB Fact Check. Additionally, a video claiming that Indian forces at Chora Post raised a white flag was amplified by Pakistan’s Minister Attaullah Tarar, despite a complete lack of supporting evidence.
Another video falsely indicated an airstrike by the Pakistan Air Force on Srinagar; however, it was footage from sectarian violence that occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, earlier in 2024 and had no relation to Kashmir. Furthermore, assertions regarding the destruction of an Indian Brigade Headquarters have been dismissed as groundless by Indian defense sources. Misleading assertions even extended to a 2024 MiG-29 crash in Barmer, Rajasthan, which was incorrectly represented by pro-Pakistan handles as a recent loss suffered by the Indian Air Force.
Even high-ranking officials are not above spreading misinformation. In a recent CNN interview, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif faced scrutiny when asked for evidence regarding claims that five Indian jets had been shot down. His reference to “social media” as a source was met with skepticism by the anchor, who stated, “We didn’t ask you here to talk about social media content.” Asif further asserted that Indian soldiers had been captured; however, this claim was later debunked and retracted, with no evidence provided to substantiate it.
As the narrative battle continues, it is clear that the dissemination of disinformation serves not only to mislead the public but also to explore vulnerabilities in the regional geopolitical landscape. Engaging responsibly with credible sources remains paramount for audiences seeking to navigate the complexities of this ongoing situation.
