Empowering Women in the Armed Forces: Centre Advocates for JAG Entry Case in Supreme Court

The Centre explained that the selection criteria between 2012 and 2022 were skewed, with 70% of positions designated for men and 30% for women, though it plans to shift towards a 50:50 ratio from 2023 to 2033.
Justice Manmohan highlighted that this approach still perpetuates gender discrimination, suggesting that gender-specific vacancies undermine the goal of creating a neutral selection process. He questioned the rationale behind limiting women’s deployment, asking, “Why are you making a discrimination that they will not be posted in Area A, B area? Why can’t you deploy them everywhere?”
In response, Bhati reiterated that the existing selection framework is a government policy, noting it will change as the nature of warfare continues to evolve.
