MP Raju Bista Applauds BRO’s Historic Road Connections: Paving the Way for Jobs and Tourism in Darjeeling and Sikkim
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated 50 vital infrastructure projects implemented by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on May 7, coinciding with the organization’s 66th Foundation Day. The event unfolded at Ashoka Hall in the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi, with notable attendees, including Darjeeling MP and BJP National Spokesperson Raju Bista.
Established on May 7, 1960, the BRO has played a critical role in developing strategic infrastructure across India’s most challenging and remote border regions. The newly unveiled projects encompass 17 roads, 30 bridges, and three additional key infrastructure works, primarily designed to enhance border security and improve connectivity for local communities.
A highlight of the ceremony was the dedication of an 11.86-kilometre road segment connecting Khunia More to Kumani in West Bengal’s Dooars region. This crucial link is part of the larger Chalsa–Jaldhaka–Bindu Barrage road project, poised to not only ease transportation for residents in Chapramari, Naya Busty, Kumai Tea Garden, Kopish Fari Busty, and Kumani but also stimulate local businesses and tourism.
During the event, Singh praised the BRO for its unwavering dedication and capability to operate in tough terrains and severe weather conditions. He emphasized that the organisation’s construction of some of the world’s highest roads and tunnels is essential to India’s defense strategy. “The government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, is committed to the comprehensive development of border regions, ensuring they are integrated with the national mainstream,” Singh stated.
Raju Bista recognized the BRO’s transformative impact on connecting the Darjeeling hills, Terai, Dooars, and Sikkim to the rest of India. “BRO’s roads not only empower our armed forces but also transform the lives of people in remote areas by creating jobs, promoting tourism, and enhancing transportation,” Bista remarked. He expressed gratitude towards the leadership of both past and present BRO for their efforts in making remote regions an integral part of India’s development story.
