Nyishi Community Issues Urgent One-Month Ultimatum to Arunachal Government: Mass Agitation on the Horizon!

The All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA) has issued a one-month ultimatum to the Arunachal Pradesh government to address a comprehensive charter of ten urgent demands. The organization has cautioned that failure to respond adequately will compel it to initiate a statewide democratic movement.

In a meeting at the Chief Minister’s office, ANYA representatives presented their demands to Pema Khandu, emphasizing the need for immediate action on critical issues facing the Nyishi community. Foremost among their concerns is the resolution of the long-standing Arunachal-Assam boundary dispute, particularly in regions inhabited by the Nyishi people. ANYA highlighted ongoing encroachments and illegal activities along the border, despite clear directives from the Supreme Court aimed at maintaining the status quo. They urged the state government to take decisive action to ensure the integrity of Arunachal Pradesh’s territorial claims.

The association’s second significant demand seeks the de-reservation of forest areas to facilitate human settlement, specifically targeting zones like the Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Durpang Reserve Forest, and Pakke Tiger Reserve. This request underlines the urgent need for balance between environmental conservation and the needs of local communities.

Among the additional demands listed by ANYA are calls for the removal of Dr. Moji Jini, the Director of Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), on allegations of occupying the position illegally after retirement. The group also demands a resolution to the Namsai land dispute and accountability for authorities accused of negligence in this matter.

ANYA has expressed a strong desire for the early implementation of a district-wise quota system through the Arunachal Pradesh Staff Selection Board (APSSB), alongside a more equitable distribution of state funds. The expansion of the state’s tourism circuit, along with amendments to the Arunachal Pradesh District-Based Entrepreneurs and Professionals (Incentives, Development, and Promotion) Act of 2015, are also on their agenda.

Further demands include the relocation of the Chief Engineer (Central) Division-A office to the Public Works Department (PWD) Commissioner’s office in Yachuli, as well as the introduction of a weeklong tradition encouraging students to wear Nyishi attire in schools.

ANYA has made it unequivocally clear: should the government fail to take substantive action within the given timeframe, the organization will resort to democratic forms of protest to champion their rights and bring attention to their concerns. This ultimatum highlights the urgency and importance of these issues to the Nyishi community, as they seek both resolution and recognition from their state government.
