Kohima Unveils State-of-the-Art Outdoor Fitness Gym: A Transformative Iconic Project for Health & Community
MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo (Ato) Rhutso officially opened an Outdoor Fitness Gym at Officers’ Hill, situated along Raj Bhavan Road in Kohima on May 7. This facility, part of the Local Area Development Programme (LADP) 2024-25 and framed as an ‘Iconic Project,’ aims to bolster health and community well-being in the city.
During the inauguration, Dr. Ato emphasized that the gym is a resource for the entire community, urging residents to utilize it and take ownership of its maintenance. “This space is for all young and old and will benefit anyone who aims to stay active and healthy,” he remarked, highlighting the gym’s accessibility and importance for public health.
In line with these health initiatives, Dr. Ato mentioned that similar facilities have been established at the Mental Hospital in Aradura, Kohima, stressing the dual focus on mental health infrastructure and physical well-being for patients. His remarks underscored the interconnected nature of mental and physical health in community development.
Kohima Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem also addressed attendees, praising the gym’s strategic location in a bustling area frequented by residents of all ages, particularly during morning and evening hours. “Health is wealth, and this project is a step toward enabling citizens to prioritize their well-being,” he stated, calling for enhanced civic engagement and collective responsibility to ensure Kohima remains a clean, healthy, and progressive town.
Emphasizing a shared responsibility, Buchem asserted, “Kohima is our town, our responsibility,” encouraging individuals to actively contribute to maintaining the space. He acknowledged the work of the MLA and the Iconic Project Committee for their thoughtful initiative and expressed hope for similar projects that could serve as models for other districts.
The event was chaired by Dr. Keviseto Kintso, while a vote of thanks was delivered by Azo Khemio, the youth president of Officers’ Hill, Kohima. Located conveniently below Kohima Law College, the outdoor gym is open to the public, inviting all citizens of Kohima to embrace an active lifestyle.
This new facility represents a significant step forward in promoting health and wellness in Nagaland’s capital, aligning with the growing trend of outdoor fitness solutions in urban areas. As health initiatives gain traction, community engagement and ownership will be crucial to ensure sustainability and use of such public amenities.
In a world increasingly recognizing the link between physical fitness and overall well-being, Kohima’s Outdoor Fitness Gym stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to fostering a healthier community. As more residents take to this space for exercise and wellness, it could very well inspire similar initiatives throughout the region, further enhancing the quality of life for all.
