Antonio Guterres Calls for Urgent Military Restraint: A Plea for Peace Between India and Pakistan

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has voiced deep concern over escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, urging both nations to exercise “maximum military restraint.” His comments come in light of India’s recent military operations across the Line of Control and the international border, amid heightened fears of a potential military confrontation.

A statement from Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, underscored the global need for peace between the two nuclear-armed countries. The call for de-escalation follows India’s initiation of ‘Operation Sindoor,’ which targeted nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation aimed to dismantle terrorist infrastructure linked to the devastating Pahalgam attack that left 25 Indians and one Nepali dead.

The Indian Army reported that the operation was a direct retaliatory measure against the recent terrorist attack. In a press release, they stated they targeted nine locations deep within Pakistan, emphasizing that their actions were “focused, measured, and non-escalatory.” The statement highlighted that no Pakistani military infrastructure was harmed and that India had exercised considerable restraint in the choice of targets and execution methods.

“Justice is served. Jai Hind,” read a post on the Indian Army’s official X handle, reinforcing their commitment to accountability for the Pahalgam tragedy. The Indian Army confirmed that they will provide more extensive details on ‘Operation Sindoor’ later today, thereby maintaining transparency regarding their actions.

In response, the Pakistani Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, labeled the strikes as “cowardly,” confirming that missiles were fired by India in the Kotli, Bahwalpur, and Muzaffarabad regions. He described the incident as occurring during an intensely fraught period between the two nations, especially following the militant attack that claimed numerous civilian lives.

The current strain in relations stems from the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 civilians—including tourists—lost their lives, escalating calls for action from both governments. Amid these rising tensions, Guterres’ plea for restraint highlights the urgent need to prevent further conflict.

As the situation continues to unfold, international observers are noting the critical importance of dialogue and diplomacy to avert a dangerous escalation between India and Pakistan. The global community remains watchful as both nations navigate a complex landscape of military readiness and diplomatic engagement.
