A man from Morigaon, Assam, has been apprehended for allegedly sexually assaulting a pet dog, sparking outrage among animal rights advocates. Narayan Das, known locally as a business owner of a restaurant, bar, and wine shop, was arrested on May 5 and subsequently presented in court on May 6, where he was remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.
According to a police official from the Morigaon police station, Das’s arrest came after disturbing footage surfaced, reportedly showing him removing a male dog from a room, luring a female Labrador inside, and then engaging in the heinous act. Witnesses claim that the dog appeared desperate to escape, crying out as Das continued with the assault. This shocking incident has drawn condemnation from various animal welfare groups.
The legal proceedings began when an FIR was filed at the Morigaon Police Station under Case No. 123/25. Das faces serious charges, including those under Sections 291 and 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and multiple sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, specifically 11(1)(a), 11(1)(e), and 11(1)(g).
The complaint was submitted by a coalition of animal welfare organizations, including the Purrpaws Foundation, Aloo Foundation, Anaajoree, Animal Crime Control, and several independent rescuers and activists who have been vocal about the need for accountability in cases of animal cruelty. Activists have expressed anger over what appears to be a troubling track record for Das, alleging that he has previously faced serious accusations, including abuse and trafficking, yet had managed to evade legal repercussions.
