Major Teak Smuggling Operation Foiled in Kamrup West: Arrest Made and Vehicle Seized
In a decisive action against illegal timber trade, forest officials from the Bondapara Range within the Kamrup West Division successfully intercepted a vehicle carrying contraband teak wood in the early hours of May 6. The operation, led by Bhairab Chandra Sarma, In-Charge of the Bondapara Range, was executed following intelligence received late Sunday night.
At approximately 1:55 AM, officials halted a Mahindra Maxx pickup truck in the Tangabari area, finding it loaded with teak logs valued at around ₹1 lakh. The driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, was apprehended on the spot, and both the vehicle and the illegally obtained teak wood have been secured at the Dhopguri Forest Camp for further investigation.
Sarma emphasized the operation as part of the department’s intensified measures to combat the rampant illegal timber trade that threatens local ecosystems. “We are dedicated to preventing such unlawful activities. Upcoming operations will reinforce our commitment to protecting forest resources,” he remarked.
The detained individual is currently undergoing questioning as authorities aim to unravel the broader networks involved in the smuggling attempt. This crackdown not only highlights the ongoing struggle against deforestation but also underlines the importance of collaborative efforts to safeguard natural resources.
As forest officials gear up for more initiatives, the message is clear: illegal logging will not be tolerated, and those involved will face stringent consequences. With ongoing investigations, the community remains hopeful for a future where the preservation of forest wealth is prioritized.
