Union Health Minister Urges Crucial Safety Audits to Safeguard Health Facilities and Prevent Disasters
Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda has called for regular safety audits in healthcare facilities to mitigate and prevent potential disasters. Speaking at the inaugural session of the second National Workshop on Health Sector Disaster Preparedness and Fire Safety in Healthcare Facilities in New Delhi, Nadda emphasized the importance of fostering disaster resilience within medical institutions.
The Minister underscored that while providing continuous, high-quality healthcare is essential, proactive measures are equally crucial in safeguarding against emergencies. He reiterated a key message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi concerning the necessity of routine fire safety audits to preemptively address potential hazards.
Nadda stressed the importance of capacity-building and training for personnel across public and private healthcare sectors. He urged state governments and Union Territories to establish fire safety weeks and conduct district-level mock drills, ensuring health workers are adequately equipped to face disaster-related challenges.
In addition to these measures, Nadda launched the Integrated Government Online Training (iGOT) modules focused on ‘Fire Safety in Healthcare Facilities.’ During the event, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava highlighted the critical need for heightened fire safety protocols, particularly as summer approaches.
The seminar also featured contributions from Rajendra Singh, a member of the National Disaster Management Authority, and Sunita Sharma, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services, who stressed the collective responsibility of healthcare providers in ensuring the safety and preparedness of facilities.
As health crises can strike unexpectedly, this proactive approach to disaster preparedness not only enhances patient safety but also strengthens the overall integrity of the healthcare system.
