GMC Gains Momentum: AAP Councillor Joins BJP, Paving the Way for Unopposed Panchayat Elections!
Guwahati, May 6: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is now officially devoid of any opposition, as all 59 sitting councillors have aligned themselves with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). The last remaining dissenting voice, Masuma Begum from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), made headlines on Tuesday by formally joining the BJP, completing a political realignment in the city’s civic body under the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The corporation currently operates with a total of 59 councillors, as the seat for Ward No. 47 remains vacant following the death of councillor Prafulla Mahanta on May 1, 2024.
GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania hailed the momentous shift, proclaiming, “This is a golden moment for Guwahati Municipal Corporation. With all councillors now part of the NDA fold, we can work seamlessly toward the city’s development. Under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP’s foundation in the city has become even stronger.”
Masuma Begum’s induction into the BJP took place during a ceremony at the party’s state headquarters, attended by key figures including Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia, Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, and BJP General Secretary Rabindra Raju. Her shift from the AAP, where she was the party’s only successful candidate in the 2022 GMC elections, has been marked by controversy. AAP spokesperson Rajiv Saikia criticized her decision, stating, “Masuma Begum was facing serious allegations of corruption, some even from her own staff. When we questioned her, she failed to give satisfactory answers. Instead of facing accountability, she jumped to the BJP. This raises serious questions—does the BJP give refuge to those accused of corruption?”
Begum’s defection comes at a crucial time, just a day before the second phase of the Panchayat elections in Assam, heightening the political stakes surrounding her move. In the 2022 municipal elections, the BJP was particularly dominant, winning 49 out of 57 contested seats, while the AGP secured six seats and three BJP candidates were elected unopposed. The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and AAP each won one seat, with AJP’s Hukum Ali later joining the BJP in 2024. With the departure of both opposition councillors, the GMC now stands united under a single political banner.
