Transforming Futures: Meghalaya Launches Global Employment Initiative for Youth Empowerment
The Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS) hosted a significant Overseas Placement Workshop at the State Convention Centre, aimed at bridging local youth with international job opportunities. This initiative underscores a commitment to enhancing the employability of Meghalaya’s workforce in the global market.
In his inaugural speech, Executive Director Jagdish Chelani, IAS, emphasized the MSSDS’s role in creating a skilled and competitive workforce. “Our Society is committed to building a skilled, globally competitive workforce,” he stated. “These initiatives are pivotal stepping stones in creating international career pathways for our youth.” Such sentiments resonate strongly as the demand for skilled professionals continues to rise globally.
The workshop attracted a diverse group, including principals from nursing institutes, students, job seekers, and training providers. One of the highlights was Toshiaki Nishikawa, Chairman and CEO of the Asean Group in Japan, who actively engaged with attendees regarding the vast employment prospects available in Japan. He pointed out the cultural, climatic, and geographical similarities between Japan and Meghalaya, which create a favorable environment for collaboration. Nishikawa noted the particularly high demand for professionals in sectors like nursing, driving, agriculture, and hospitality.
Participants benefited from informative sessions led by industry experts. These sessions delved into global job trends, the necessary skill sets for success, visa application processes, and cultural adaptation strategies for overseas employment. Additionally, attendees had the opportunity for one-on-one consultations with placement agencies specializing in various fields, including healthcare, hospitality, information technology, and construction.
Following the workshop, the Japanese delegation toured the Training Centre for Overseas Placement and the IT Park at Umsawli, expressing appreciation for Meghalaya’s advanced training infrastructure. This tour not only highlighted the state’s commitment to skill development but also showcased the potential for international partnerships aimed at bolstering employment prospects for local youth.
MSSDS has set ambitious goals under its Vision 2030, which includes training 150,000 youth to achieve a 70 per cent livelihood outcome. The organization aspires to facilitate both national and international placements, with a target of sending 10,000 youths overseas.
To date, MSSDS has successfully trained 24,650 individuals across 12 districts by partnering with 109 training organizations and operating over 300 training centers. The society’s programs focus on skill development across 28 sectors and 149 trades, positioning Meghalaya as a hub for workforce development.
This Overseas Placement Workshop represents a crucial step towards empowering Meghalaya’s youth and providing them with the tools to build successful careers in a globalized economy. As the demand for skilled labor continues to grow, initiatives like this are essential in ensuring that local talent can compete on an international scale.
