Government Urges States to Ignite Preparedness: Activate Air Raid Sirens and Master Safety Drills

With escalating tensions along the Line of Control in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, the Indian government has taken proactive measures to bolster civil defense in northern and western states as well as Union Territories. On Monday, the Ministry of Home Affairs directed states such as Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana to implement and enhance civil defense protocols. These measures are crucial as concerns grow over a potential military response from India.

States and UTs have been instructed to conduct mock drills on May 7, testing various emergency preparedness scenarios. Key initiatives include activating air raid warning sirens, implementing blackout measures in targeted areas, and training civilians—especially students—on essential safety protocols in the event of an aerial or ground assault.

Additional directives comprise rehearsing evacuation plans and camouflaging critical installations like power plants and military infrastructure, which are vital for national defense. These initiatives aim to improve the readiness of both the civilian populace and administrative systems amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

The directive comes during a series of high-level strategic meetings in the capital. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with Japanese Defence Minister General Nakatani San to discuss bilateral relations and mutual security concerns. Both leaders condemned terrorism in all forms and stressed the importance of collaboration against cross-border threats. Singh specifically criticized Pakistan’s state-sponsored terrorism, which he argued undermines regional stability.

Singh and General Nakatani reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening India-Japan relations, especially in light of China’s increasing military presence in the Indo-Pacific. The two nations agreed to expand maritime cooperation, underscoring the strategic partnership shared between them.

Discussion during the meeting also touched on the significant implications of cross-border terrorism, including the scrutiny of Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities. Singh advised against investments in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir that could potentially fund terrorism, pushing forthright conversations about security and military collaborations.

The focus also extended to enhancing industrial cooperation, with topics including collaboration in advanced sectors like automation and Artificial Intelligence. Furthermore, both ministers expressed interest in expanding cooperation in emerging domains such as cybersecurity and space technology.

In a parallel development, Defence Secretary R.K. Singh held a discussion with Prime Minister Modi regarding critical military policies and procurement strategies as India considers possible retaliatory actions. The Defence Secretary oversees the defense budget and is instrumental in guiding policies that affect the armed forces, particularly in light of recent security developments.

The government’s push for improved civilian readiness, paired with strategic international dialogues, signifies a multifaceted approach to countercurrent threats and enhance national security protocols. As India navigates this complex geopolitical landscape, the collaboration with allies like Japan offers avenues for bolstered defense strategies and shared commitments to combat terrorism effectively.
