Urgent: NEIGRIHMS Pauses Recruitment Amid Protests Over Gender Equality in Meghalaya
The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Meghalaya has suspended its recruitment process in response to substantial protests driven by social organizations advocating for gender equity in hiring practices. The protests have prominently called for the implementation of an 80:20 female-to-male employee ratio, alongside demands for a review of the roster registry and the establishment of examination centers throughout the state.
On May 5, a pivotal meeting was held, convened by government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh, bringing together NEIGRIHMS officials and a delegation from the Khasi Students Union (KSU), a prominent local advocacy group. The outcome of this discussion led to the decision to pause the recruitment process until the raised concerns are adequately addressed.
Lyngdoh stated, “In view of these developments, it was decided that until all matters are sorted out, NEIGRIHMS will halt the entire recruitment process.” He expressed optimism that these issues could see resolution within the week.
In addition to local efforts, a government delegation is set to engage with the Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare to discuss issues that surpass NEIGRIHMS’s administrative purview. Lyngdoh emphasized that the governing council of NEIGRIHMS, chaired by the Union Minister of Health, will thoroughly review the concerns presented. Resolutions made by the council will be relayed to the central ministry for further consideration.
Established in 1987, NEIGRIHMS holds a significant place in the North Eastern region as the first postgraduate medical institution. It continues to serve as a central hub for healthcare education and services in the area, underscoring the importance of addressing governance and equity issues within its framework.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders remain hopeful for a timely resolution, aiming to balance the needs of the institution with the pressing demands for equitable representation and organizational transparency.
