GUWAHATI: In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has detained Prayas Chakravorty, the Deputy General Manager of Oil India Limited (OIL) in Duliajan, Assam, along with Jyoti Kumar Singh, the Deputy General Manager of Sales and Marketing at a private firm based in Noida. Their arrests stem from a bribery investigation involving a sum of ₹7 lakh. The operation was initiated following a trap set by the agency, which caught the public servant in possession of cash and incriminating documents related to the bribe.
During the investigation, CBI officials recovered not only the bribe money but also documents linked to gold purchases from the arrested public servant. Both Chakravorty and Singh are scheduled to appear before the Special Judge (CBI) in Ghaziabad on May 5.
The CBI registered its case on May 3, implicating four individuals, including the aforementioned DGM from OIL, the Managing Director of the Noida-based company, and unidentified public officials. Allegations suggest that the OIL officer conspired with private firm executives to secure kickbacks in exchange for contract awards and the expediting of supplier bills, resulting in illicit gains for themselves and significant losses to the Union exchequer.
According to investigative reports, the OIL Deputy General Manager allegedly demanded 70 grams of gold jewelry as a bribe, not only for himself but also for unnamed public officials. In response, Singh offered ₹7 lakh in cash instead, citing his inability to procure the gold directly.
The Managing Director of the private company is said to have facilitated the arrangement of the cash, which was then handed over to the OIL official. CBI sources revealed that the public servant subsequently used a portion of the funds to purchase gold coins worth ₹3,73,550 from a shop in Noida, taking the rest—amounting to ₹3.34 lakh—in cash to his residence the same day.
CBI teams have executed extensive searches at various locations in Delhi, Noida, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia, uncovering gold jewelry believed to have been obtained as bribes, over ₹30 lakh in cash from private individuals, multiple mobile phones, and a range of incriminating documents.
As the investigation unfolds, CBI officials stress the seriousness of the allegations and the potential implications for all involved parties. The agency is committed to ensuring accountability and transparency in public service, as it takes necessary measures to combat corruption.
