Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Accuses Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Over Controversial Pakistan Visits

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing critique of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday, demanding clarity regarding Gogoi’s purported visit to Pakistan. Sarma asserted that, unlike deities, Gogoi should be held accountable for his actions. “If we can arrest 40 people for expressing support for Pakistan, we can certainly act against Gogoi for his visit. He should clarify whether he visited Pakistan and why his wife has traveled there 19 times,” Sarma emphasized. He further warned that if Gogoi fails to provide answers, the Assam government knows how to uncover the truth.

Sarma accused Gogoi of being a “criminal” for allegedly visiting Pakistan, stating, “Going to Pakistan is a crime in my view. There are no national parks like Kaziranga or Manas in Pakistan. Whose home did he visit there? He must inform us.” The Chief Minister added that the Assam government and its Special Investigation Team (SIT) are currently examining the nature and purpose of Gogoi’s alleged 15-day stay in Pakistan.

In response to Sarma’s remarks, Gogoi criticized the Chief Minister for prioritizing personal attacks over pressing issues affecting the youth in Assam, such as rising school dropout rates and rampant child labor. Addressing Sarma’s controversial challenge about his child’s citizenship, Gogoi dismissed it as a distraction from more significant challenges facing the state. “The Chief Minister is more concerned with my children than the welfare of Assam’s youth. Dropout rates are increasing; children are being sold into slavery, and government schools are deteriorating,” he stated. Gogoi emphasized the Congress party’s commitment to addressing these critical issues.

Sarma also raised questions regarding the employment status of Gogoi’s wife, speculating whether she earns a salary from an NGO based in Pakistan while residing in India. He asked for clarification on the citizenship statuses of Gogoi’s wife and children, demanding comprehensive answers to several pointed inquiries. “Did you visit Pakistan for 15 days? If so, please clarify the purpose. Does your wife receive a salary from a Pakistan-based NGO? What is the citizenship status of your family?” he posted on social media.

This exchange of accusations highlights a deeper political battle in Assam, reflecting growing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition. As both sides escalate their rhetoric, the welfare of Assam’s children continues to hang in the balance, posing an urgent challenge for local leaders.

Sarma’s comments and Gogoi’s rebuttal underscore a shifting political landscape in Assam, where issues of national security and local welfare are becoming increasingly entwined. Political analysts suggest that as the public discourse evolves, leaders must navigate these complex narratives to effectively address the pressing concerns facing Assam today.

This ongoing debate will likely continue to shape the political dialogue in the region, as both parties seek to assert their narratives and gain traction among voters in a rapidly changing socio-political environment.
