Assam Welcomes Japanese Investments: Speaker Nukaga Leads Dynamic Delegation for Thriving Partnership
Assam is currently hosting a significant delegation from Japan, led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nukaga Fukushiro. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that these meetings aim to attract Japanese investments, building on previous engagements. Notably, this marks the fourth high-level Japanese delegation to visit Assam since February, signaling a strengthening relationship between the two nations.
Sarma expressed optimism regarding the frequent visits from top Japanese officials, noting that they reflect positively on the state’s ongoing development projects supported by Japan. “During my visit to Japan in February, I met with the Speaker, who graciously hosted me for dinner. I extended an invitation for him to visit Assam, and now he has arrived with a delegation of over 50 members,” Sarma shared with reporters during a visit to the upcoming Tata semiconductor unit, which the foreign delegation attended.
The Japanese delegation arrived in Guwahati on Saturday for a three-day visit. On the evening of their arrival, Sarma engaged in detailed discussions with Fukushiro and his team. The event concluded with a dinner honored by the governor of Assam and the Speaker of the Assam Assembly.
Sunday began with visits by the delegation to a new skill training center supported by Japan and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Guwahati. The Chief Minister later reported that they toured the semiconductor plant at Jagiroad, highlighting ongoing cooperative initiatives. “I will be hosting the honorable Speaker for dinner at my residence tonight,” Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of engagement with Japan, citing that their recent withdrawal of travel advisories against Assam is a positive development. “The frequent delegations coming here within such a short timeframe represent a strong opportunity for us. If we maintain this momentum, we can secure further assistance and industry support from Japan in the future,” he noted, underscoring the ongoing projects bolstered by Japanese collaboration.
While at IIT Guwahati, members of the Japanese delegation explored various research facilities, including the Centre for Nanotechnology. They toured a state-of-the-art cleanroom that parallels the facilities being developed at the Tata semiconductor plant, which IIT is actively supporting. The delegation also had the chance to review indigenous research innovations and projects within nanotechnology, along with a visit to the Technology Incubation Centre and Research Park. Here, they learned about advancements in artificial intelligence and healthcare technologies, with start-ups showcasing a range of sustainable medical devices.
Fukushiro addressed attendees during their visit, underscoring the shared democratic principles and developmental aspirations of India and Japan. He highlighted the necessity for collaborative efforts in emerging technologies and sustainable development. “Both of our nations stand as leaders in innovation and democracy within the Eastern Hemisphere,” he stated, calling for more profound cooperation through research, education, and cultural exchange.
The visiting delegation included four members of the Japanese Parliament, senior officials from the Japanese government, and representatives from the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi, alongside 22 industry delegates. IIT Guwahati’s Director, Professor Devendra Jalihal, welcomed the delegation, offering an overview of the institute’s vision and its commitment to advancing scientific research. Discussions centered around strengthening current collaborations and expanding Indo-Japan student and research exchanges to 50,000, as envisioned by the Prime Ministers of both nations.
