Hailakandi, May 4: Fresh polling is currently in progress in 32 polling stations across Assam’s Hailakandi district, following reports of extensive irregularities during the panchayat elections held last Friday. The re-poll, mandated by the Assam State Election Commission, is being tightly secured to ensure a transparent voting process.
As of 1:30 PM, the voter turnout has reached 44.20%, with the polling remaining peaceful thus far, and no incidents reported from any re-polling booths. The re-elections are taking place in multiple constituencies, including 14 polling stations in the Kalinagar-Paikan Zilla Parishad constituency, 13 in the Sahabad Zilla Parishad constituency, three in Narayanpur-Bandukmara, and one each in the Ramchandi-Nimaichandpur and Katlicherra-Baghcherra Zilla Parishad constituencies.
Encouraging participation has been noted, especially in rural areas, where long queues of eager women voters were spotted outside the polling stations. A particularly inspiring moment occurred at Nimar Ali High School in the Kalinagar-Paikan constituency, where 95-year-old Moina Biwi made her way to the polls. “I have no expectations, but I voted to perform my fundamental duty,” she shared with The Assam Tribune.
Polling officials and security personnel are closely overseeing the process to prevent any further issues and to ensure that the democratic exercise continues without a hitch. The decision to conduct a re-poll was made after presiding officers reported serious discrepancies, including reports of rigging, administrative mismanagement, and other irregularities during the initial voting on Friday. Notably, the overall voter turnout for that day stood at a significant 73.89%.
As polling continues, officials anticipate that the final voter turnout will increase as voting extends until the designated closing time. This renewed effort aims to uphold the integrity of the electoral process in Hailakandi, allowing citizens to exercise their democratic rights without obstruction.
