In a historic move, residents of Boca Chica, a South Texas community synonymous with Elon Musk’s SpaceX operations, have voted to incorporate the area as the city of Starbase. This pivotal decision aligns with Musk’s ongoing vision, bringing it to life with strong local support. Out of 177 ballots cast, 173 were in favor, confirmed by Cameron County officials, who oversaw the election. While 40 ballots remain uncounted, the overwhelming majority back incorporation, meeting the necessary threshold.
This small Texan enclave, covering about 1.5 square miles near the Mexican border, has been crucial to SpaceX since the company broke ground there in 2014. Now serving as its central hub and launch site, Boca Chica, or Starbase as Musk often calls it on his platform, X, houses hundreds of employees. “My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX,” Musk shared in 2021, highlighting his personal connection to the area.
In December, a petition was filed to formalize Starbase’s city status. It described a community comprising about 500 people, including over 219 permanent residents and more than 100 children, most of whom are SpaceX renters and workers. Incorporation allows the municipality to establish its police and fire departments and adopt local ordinances. According to Alan Bojorquez, an Austin attorney specializing in municipal law, new cities in Texas have minimal mandatory obligations, though road maintenance transitions from county to municipal responsibility. Starbase could benefit from state and federal grants, gain certain legal immunities, and, notably, secure the power to condemn property.
The creation of Starbase is more than a nod to SpaceX’s cutting-edge ventures and underscores the interplay between private spaceflight and regional development. As the newly minted city evolves, it reflects broader trends in real estate and community building shaped by industry leaders like Musk.
