This week’s sectarian violence in Syria has left over 100 people dead, as tensions between pro-government forces and militants from the country’s Druse minority intensified and spread. However, by Thursday evening, Syrian authorities had struck deals with Druse leaders to quell the unrest, aligning with the government’s strategy to incorporate the nation’s complex web of armed groups into a unified military force. Leaders in the Druse-controlled Sweida region have expressed a newfound openness to cooperating with government efforts.
The conflict erupted Tuesday following the circulation of an audio clip on social media that allegedly featured a Druse cleric insulting the Prophet Muhammad. The cleric denied the accusation, and Syria’s Interior Ministry confirmed his non-involvement. Despite this, extremist Sunni Muslim factions launched attacks on Druse-majority areas, including Jaramana near Damascus. Druse militias responded strongly, prompting government intervention to restore order.
By Wednesday, clashes had spread to Ashrafieh Sahnaya, on Damascus’s southern outskirts, and into Sweida itself, with hostilities continuing into Thursday morning. In a statement released Thursday night, five prominent Druse leaders indicated a willingness to work with the government, calling for Interior Ministry personnel and judicial police from Sweida to be activated.
Government forces have been deployed to secure the road from Sweida to Damascus, a route that saw significant clashes on Wednesday. Reinforcements were also sent to safeguard Jaramana. Druse leaders stated that the moves aim to protect vulnerable regions and populations.
Jibran, a doctor treating the wounded in Sweida, reported that a Druse leaders’ delegation headed to Ashrafieh Sahnaya on Wednesday was ambushed by Bedouin fighters. Later, Bedouin tribes shelled a Druse militia checkpoint in Kanaker, leading to additional overnight fighting. Jibran noted that approximately 70 individuals have been reported killed or missing amid the violence.
The turmoil underscores Syria’s ongoing sectarian divides, a stark reminder of the country’s fragile peace since a rebel coalition, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, ousted President Bashar al-Assad. Despite efforts to integrate various militias into a national army, challenges remain as many groups operate independently.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, reported that the death toll from three days of fighting reached 101, including 35 Druse on the Damascus-Sweida road and five Druse fighters in a Sweida village. Prominent casualties included former Ashrafieh Sahnaya mayor Hassan Warwar and his son. Reports indicate 20 government security personnel and 10 allied fighters also perished in the unrest.
Adding complexity, Israel conducted airstrikes on Wednesday, targeting “operatives” accused of attacking Syrian Druse civilians. Abu Hassan, a Druse militia leader, described widespread fighting between Sweida and Daraa, with Druse forces combating Bedouin militants aligned with the government. Governor Amr al-Sheikh blamed “outlawed groups” for the violence but did not specify which factions were involved.
Loubna Baset, a Druse activist, voiced mistrust toward government efforts, emphasizing the community’s right to self-defense. While government forces include Druse members, the broader issue of minority safety persists. Ongoing sectarian challenges, as evidenced by similar events in Syria’s coastal Alawite region in March, continue to jeopardize stability in a nation still haunted by its complex ethnic and religious tapestry.
