Mizoram Escalates Bold Action Against Myanmar Drug Smuggling, Declares CM Lalduhoma
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has reaffirmed his government’s steadfast dedication to tackling the rising crisis of drug smuggling, particularly from neighboring Myanmar. In a significant meeting with a delegation from the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) led by Chairperson Antar Singh Arya, he detailed the proactive initiatives undertaken by the state to address the drug menace.
“Our government has established a coordination committee to expedite our efforts against drug trafficking,” Lalduhoma stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Mizoram, which shares an 828-kilometer porous border with Myanmar and Bangladesh, has increasingly become a focal point for drug trafficking activities.
In 2024 alone, the state’s Excise and Narcotics department reported significant drug seizures, including 46.5 kg of heroin, 138.8 kg of Methamphetamine tablets, and 586.6 kg of ganja. Additionally, authorities arrested 7,309 individuals for drug and alcohol-related offenses within the same timeframe, highlighting the scale of the problem.
Data from the state police reveals that drugs and substances seized in 2024 were valued at over Rs 211 crore, with 468 arrests made in connection to drug-related crimes. Notably, the seizures comprised 80.8 kg of heroin worth Rs 24.25 crore, 627.7 kg of Methamphetamine tablets estimated at over Rs 81.6 crore, and 35 kg of crystal meth valued at over Rs 105 crore.
The toll of drug abuse has been heartbreaking, with at least 71 lives, including 11 women, lost to addiction-related issues in the past year, according to officials from the Excise and Narcotics department.
During the discussion with the NCST delegation, CM Lalduhoma also highlighted the significance of Hindi education in Mizoram, aligning with the commission’s aims to promote the language within the northeastern state. “Our government supports the implementation of a three-language formula in all educational institutions across the state to enhance Hindi education,” he explained.
Additionally, the Chief Minister mentioned the ongoing construction of six working women’s hostels, illustrating the government’s commitment to supporting women’s empowerment and education.
As Mizoram intensifies its battle against drug trafficking while simultaneously advocating for language education, the situation remains critical and continues to evolve. The community’s collective efforts, alongside governmental action, will be vital in resolving these pressing issues confronting the state.
This multifaceted approach not only addresses immediate public health concerns but also fosters educational development, demonstrating Mizoram’s determination to improve the lives of its citizens amidst ongoing challenges.
