Meghalaya CM Uplifts Future Champions: 44 Athletes Awarded Prestigious Sports Scholarships Ahead of Khelo India Games
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma showcased his commitment to nurturing the state’s athletic talent on Thursday by launching the Chief Minister’s Sports Scholarship Scheme, which will benefit 44 athletes spanning ten disciplines. This initiative, unveiled during a ceremonial send-off for Team Meghalaya, aims to bolster the athletes representing the state in the upcoming Khelo India Games 2025 in Bihar from May 4 to 15.
The scholarship scheme is part of the Meghalaya government’s broader strategy to enhance the local sports ecosystem through substantial infrastructure development and systematic policy reforms over the past six years. “These scholarships acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our athletes, encouraging them to strive for greater achievements and bring pride to Meghalaya and the nation,” stated Sangma during the event.
Reflecting on the challenges faced by Meghalaya’s sports sector prior to 2018, the Chief Minister noted that a lack of coherent policy, inadequate facilities, and limited financial support hampered progress. However, since the MDA government took office, there has been a concerted effort to revitalize sports in the state. The revival of the Meghalaya Games—once a once-in-a-generation event—has transformed them into a rotational, district-level competition focusing on grassroots talent discovery and inclusive participation.
Sangma emphasized a “mission-mode” approach to enhancing sports infrastructure, which includes modernizing stadiums, training facilities, and establishing local sports hubs across both urban and rural areas. He elaborated, “The scholarship is not just about money; it’s a message to every athlete that your hard work matters, and we stand with you.”
The Chief Minister also provided an update on preparations for the National Games 2027, which Meghalaya will host. He assured the community of a world-class event, revealing comprehensive plans that include urban renewal, beautification, and environmental sustainability initiatives. Among these projects are the rejuvenation of the Wah Umkhrah and Umshyrpi rivers—integral to ongoing efforts to enhance Shillong, Tura, and Jowai, cities pivotal to the Games’ success.
Sangma affirmed, “This is not just about sports. It is about showcasing the spirit, talent, and beauty of Meghalaya to the rest of the country and the world.” Through initiatives like the scholarship scheme and the upcoming National Games, the state is not only investing in sports but also in the potential of its youth, reinforcing its dedication to creating a vibrant and competitive athletic culture.
As Meghalaya prepares to shine on the national stage, the Chief Minister’s efforts symbolize a transformative phase for sports in the state, paving the way for future achievements and fostering a new generation of athletes eager to represent Meghalaya with pride.
