Tragic Rockslide Claims Three Family Lives: Mizo Minister Faces Outrage Over Funeral Handling
The Mizoram government’s Disaster Management and Rehabilitation (DM&R) Department has allocated an ex gratia payment of ₹12 lakh to the family of three individuals who lost their lives in a tragic rockslide on April 28. The victims—Lalrinliana, 68, his wife Lungtiawii, 52, and their daughter Vanlalhruaii, 25—were residents of Falkland locality in Aizawl. They were returning from Lengpui Airport when a massive rockslide struck their vehicle just a few kilometers from the airport. The vehicle was driven by Lallawmzuala, the victims’ son and brother, who survived the incident but sustained injuries.
This unfortunate event followed heavy rainfall in the Mamit and Aizawl districts and has garnered widespread sympathy across the state. Vanlalhruaii, who had taken leave from her job in Singapore, was back home to assist her family in moving to a new house.
However, a photograph circulating on social media showing the DM&R Minister presenting the ex gratia cheque to Lallawmzuala during the funeral has sparked significant backlash. Many users condemned the act, arguing that it violates Mizo cultural norms that deem funerals as solemn and sacred occasions, where political or official displays are considered inappropriate, particularly before the burial.
Critics have accused the Minister of exploiting a moment of grief for publicity. Prominent social activist Vanramchhuangi, known as Ruatfela Nu, expressed her discontent on Instagram, stating, “In Mizo society, the dead and the grieving are deeply respected. A funeral is a solemn Church event, not a stage for political display. Ex gratia compensation is a citizen’s right under national disaster laws—not a favor from any Minister or ruling party. Acting as if the money comes from their own pocket is shameful.”
She further suggested that if the Minister genuinely seeks popularity, he should demonstrate empathy by mourning with the family or offering assistance from his personal funds, which would earn him true respect.
This incident highlights the ongoing dialogue around appropriateness in times of tragedy, particularly the intersection of politics and personal loss. As the state mourns these losses, the community’s response underscores the importance of cultural sensitivities in managing public affairs. The tragic events have not only drawn attention to the dangers posed by natural disasters but also to the community’s deep values surrounding mourning and respect for the deceased. As Mizoram navigates this challenging period, it is clear that the focus will remain on honoring the victims while fostering sensitivity in public displays of support.
