A 26-year-old woman from Thangrai village in the Nongnah area of Ranikor Civil Sub-Division, South West Khasi Hills District, is recovering after a brutal attack alleged to have been carried out by a local man. Tophibet Pariong suffered severe injuries, including a throat slashing, reportedly at the hands of Jacinth Sanglyne from Nongkdait village. The incident occurred around 2 PM on Wednesday at Pariong’s residence.
According to South West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Banraplang Jyrwa, the assault prompted a swift response from local authorities. The Ranikor police station team was dispatched immediately upon receiving reports of the attack and subsequently apprehended the accused in his village. “The weapon used in the assault, a knife, was also recovered from the victim’s home,” Jyrwa noted.
After the attack, Pariong was rushed to Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. Her condition remains critical but stable as medical professionals continue to monitor her recovery. Authorities are taking this case seriously; a formal complaint has been registered at the Mawkyrwat Women police station. Jyrwa confirmed that investigative units, including crime scene and fingerprint specialists from Shillong, are set to arrive in Mawkyrwat to gather crucial evidence.
