On International Labour Day 2025, Chief Minister PS Golay expressed heartfelt appreciation for the diligent efforts of workers who form the backbone of society and the economy. In his message, he highlighted that this day not only celebrates the hard work and dedication of laborers but also serves as a reminder of their invaluable contributions to a prosperous and progressive Sikkim.
Speaking to the public, Golay reaffirmed his government’s commitment to prioritizing labor welfare within its development agenda. He announced several key initiatives aimed at enhancing the dignity, well-being, and livelihoods of workers. One significant change is the revision of monthly wages to ₹15,000, which aims to offer workers a more secure and respectable standard of living.
The Chief Minister also noted the government’s initiatives to improve housing and essential services, alongside expanded healthcare benefits for laborers and their families. A noteworthy development is the establishment of a 100-bedded ESIC Hospital in Mamring, Rangpo, which will provide accessible and quality healthcare to the working community.
To further bolster labor welfare systems, Golay revealed that a cadre review is underway to ensure effective governance. This includes technological innovations such as an online registration app and a dedicated Labour Clearance Certificate Portal designed to streamline procedures and enhance transparency.
Additionally, the government is extending financial assistance to workers under the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) scheme. Active efforts are being made to register workers under the Sikkim Labour Registration Act, 2021, which aims to protect their rights and entitlements. Through various awareness programs focusing on labor rights, working conditions, and fair practices, the government seeks to create a safe, equitable, and progressive work environment.
Golay emphasized the importance of fostering healthy relationships between employers and employees, which he deems essential for sustainable development and social harmony. “These initiatives stand as a testament to our government’s unwavering commitment to improving labor welfare, simplifying administrative processes, and promoting inclusive public welfare,” he explained.
On this Labor Day, he called on the community to reaffirm their commitment to honoring the dignity of labor and work collaboratively toward building a just and empowering society for everyone. The message was clear: the Sikkim government remains dedicated to enhancing the lives of its workers, ensuring that their contributions do not go unnoticed.
