Shock Layoffs: 195 Employees Fired at IT Firm, Unlike Tata’s TCS or Wipro
In a challenging turn of events for the Indian IT sector, Infosys has recently terminated 195 trainees from its Mysuru campus after they did not meet the required benchmarks in internal assessments. This dismissal marks the fourth round of layoffs this year, raising the total number of dismissed trainees to approximately 800 since February 2025, according to a report by Moneycontrol.
The affected group was part of a larger cohort of 680, and this action reflects the ongoing struggles within the tech industry, with Infosys projecting a modest revenue growth of only 0 to 3 percent for the current fiscal year. The company’s policies mandate that trainees who do not meet assessment criteria cannot continue in their programs.
In light of the situation, Infosys has announced partnerships with UpGrad and NIIT to facilitate upskilling initiatives for those impacted. About 250 of the dismissed trainees have opted to enroll in these programs, focusing primarily on Business Process Management (BPM) and IT skills. Additionally, around 150 individuals have opted for job transition services. The training provided is entirely free through these collaborations, with Infosys covering costs associated with both training and transitional support.
For some trainees who joined after a prolonged delay exceeding 2.5 years, Infosys is providing an alternative career trajectory in BPM. This includes 12 weeks of specialized training aimed at equipping them for potential roles in that sector. A relieving letter will accompany the trainees, and they will also receive an extra month’s salary to facilitate this transition.
Recognizing the challenges faced by those who do not wish to pursue BPM, Infosys is offering logistical support, including transportation from Mysuru to Bengaluru, travel allowances to their hometowns, and access to accommodation services at the Employee Care Centre in Mysuru until they are ready to leave.
The Karnataka Labour Department has stated that Infosys is not at fault regarding these dismissals, highlighting that the individuals affected were apprentices rather than full employees. Consequently, labor laws governing layoffs do not apply in this context. This resolution followed an inquiry initiated by the Union Labour Ministry, during which Infosys reaffirmed its adherence to internal guidelines throughout this process.
