Unveiling the Truth: CrowdStrike Denies Responsibility for Delta’s Disruptive Flight Cancellations
Travelers faced long lines at the Delta Air Lines terminal at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after a massive outage on July 19, 2024, caused thousands of flight cancellations. Despite reaching out with offers for assistance, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said Delta declined onsite help during the crisis.
The outage, attributed to a failed software update, impacted various industries and resulted in over 5,000 Delta flights being canceled, costing the airline an estimated $500 million. Delta CEO Ed Bastian indicated that the airline would seek legal action to recover losses and has enlisted the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner. He emphasized the necessity of testing technology thoroughly to avoid such disruptions.
CrowdStrike’s lawyer Michael Carlinsky refuted the implication that the firm was responsible for Delta’s IT failures, highlighting that the company had acted promptly and transparently while Delta did not. CrowdStrike’s stock dropped over 36% due to the issue, and shareholders are pursuing damages in a Texas federal court.
CrowdStrike plans to release future updates in stages and expressed hope for a cooperative resolution with Delta. The company is set to report its fiscal second-quarter earnings on August 28. Delta did not comment on the litigation threats, and Microsoft has yet to issue a statement.
