Unprecedented Success: NBSE 2025 Students Achieve Record Pass Rates
In a remarkable display of academic progress, Nagaland’s High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Examination results for 2025 reveal a five-year high pass rate of 75.16%. This year’s performance, observed after the Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) released the data, marks a significant upward trend from the 64.69% pass rate in 2022. Over 22,000 students took part, with girls slightly leading by a pass rate of 75.39% compared to 74.90% for boys. Notably, girls dominated the Top 20 merit list, filling 81 of the 126 available positions, thus highlighting a consistent pattern in gender-related academic achievements.
Another groundbreaking moment was recorded in the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) exams. For the first time, a government school student topped the Arts stream, marking a pivotal change in public schooling perception. This milestone was achieved by a student from Government Higher Secondary School, Jotsoma. The Arts stream saw a pass rate of 84.05%, with girls outperforming once again — 87.9% of them clearing their exams compared to 79.25% of boys. Similarly, in the Commerce stream, girls achieved an 87.5% pass rate against the boys’ 78.75%, while Science saw 78.25% of girls passing, outstripping boys who achieved a 74.27% pass rate.
Over the last five years, overall academic performance in Nagaland has seen definite yet steady improvement. In 2021, the Arts stream had a 69.37% pass rate, soaring to 84.05% by 2025. Commerce increased from a 74.39% pass rate in 2021 to 81.40%. Although Science showed a slight decline from the 91.35% pandemic-era peak in 2021, the 76.54% pass rate remains an improvement on pre-pandemic figures.
The NBSE’s efforts towards inclusivity are evident. Of the 20 Children with Special Needs (CWSN) candidates in the HSLC, 10 successfully passed the exams, representing a significant step forward in equity. The HSSLC exam accommodated 14 CWSN candidates, 8 of whom passed, with 5 securing First Division. This was made possible through supportive measures such as extended time and the provision of scribes, demonstrating NBSE’s ongoing commitment to inclusive education.
A significant policy shift accompanies these results. Under the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, NBSE has expanded re-exam opportunities, allowing students who fail in up to four subjects to retake exams in June 2025. Additionally, students who passed but wish to improve scores can also retake exams in up to four subjects. For those who cleared the HSLC but scored poorly in one subject, there’s an opportunity to retake that subject, opening avenues for further education or employment requiring full clearance.
Further simplifying bureaucratic processes, NBSE now offers digitally signed Migration Certificates online, enhancing accessibility for students. Applications for the upcoming re-exams will be accepted online from May 12 to May 17, a move aligning with contemporary digital practices and ensuring a streamlined process for students. This year’s results in Nagaland signal a promising trajectory in educational attainment, particularly in gender parity and inclusive policies. The visible improvement across various streams underpins a transformation that potentially heralds a new era for Nagaland’s educational landscape.
