Unveiling Delhi’s Tribute: Statue and Street Named for Assam’s Hero Bodofa Upendranath Brahma
In a move to honor the influential legacy of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma, a statue and street naming will be unveiled in Delhi on Thursday, May 1. Announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 25, this tribute acknowledges Brahma’s substantial contributions to the Bodo community and Indian society. The initiative not only pays homage to his efforts but also coincides with the commemoration of Brahma’s passing, further cementing his impact on Bodo identity and activism.
“On May 1, a statue will be unveiled and a street will be named after Bodofa Upendranath Brahma in Delhi, as a mark of tribute to his invaluable contributions,” Sarma shared via his official account on X. This significant event has prompted careful planning in Delhi, with Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota orchestrating a review meeting to ensure its smooth execution.
Born on March 31, 1956, Upendranath Brahma was a pivotal figure in the Bodo social and educational landscape. He dedicated his life to advancing the political awareness and education of the Bodo people. Brahma first emerged as a leader within the student community by serving as president of the Goalpara District Students Union in 1978–79. He later ascended to prominent roles in the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), including vice-president and eventually president between 1981 and 1986. Under his stewardship, the ABSU expanded its concerns from cultural matters to political issues, aiming to instill political maturity among young Bodos and thus fundamentally reshaping student-led activism in Assam.
Brahma passed away on May 1, 1990, but his legacy endures through the annual observation of Bodofa Day, marking the anniversary of his death. In recognition of his visionary leadership and enduring impact, the title “Bodofa,” meaning “Guardian of Bodos,” was posthumously bestowed upon him on May 8, 1990.
The statue unveiling and street naming in Delhi aim to highlight Brahma’s pivotal role in fostering education and identity within the Bodo community and securing greater awareness at the national level. It is a fitting tribute to a man whose activism significantly fueled the socio-political evolution of the Bodo community in Assam.
This tribute coincides with a time when the socio-political narrative regarding the Bodo people continues to evolve. By acknowledging Bodofa Upendranath Brahma in the nation’s capital, the event aims to foster understanding and recognition of his crucial contributions across a broader spectrum. The memorial in Delhi not only strengthens the connection between Brahma’s legacy and present-day discussions but also reinforces his enduring influence on Bodo cultural and political life.
The upcoming event in Delhi is an important reminder of Brahma’s persistent advocacy for education and identity among the Bodo people, offering a renewed opportunity to reflect on his significant contributions to Indian society. As preparations finalize under the oversight of Assam’s governmental leadership, the initiative promises to be a momentous occasion honoring a leader whose efforts continue to resonate with and inspire the Bodo community.
In this spirit, the tribute serves as a new chapter of recognition for Bodofa Upendranath Brahma, inviting both remembrance and continued dialogue regarding his legacy and the ongoing narrative of the Bodo people in India.
