The newly reconstructed 180-foot bailey bridge over the Teesta River in Sangkalang, North Sikkim, has officially opened to traffic, marking the restoration of a critical transportation link between Mangan and the Dzongu region. The Indian Army’s 72 Engineer Regiment of the Trishakti Corps undertook the construction, successfully replacing the previous bridge that collapsed on February 11. This new bridge, boasting a load capacity of 24 tonnes, reconnects the major areas of Mangan, Dzongu, and Chungthang, which are vital to North Sikkim’s network.
The collapse of the previous suspension bridge led to significant disruptions for local residents, restricting movement and halting the delivery of essential goods and services for more than two months. The reconstruction of the bridge, despite harsh weather and challenging terrain, showcases the dedication of the Indian Army engineers who managed to complete the project swiftly, minimizing inconvenience to the local population.
