Bupenda Meitei’s Bold Denial: Unveiling Truth Behind Biren Singh Audio Leak
In a highly charged situation amidst Manipur’s political landscape, Congress spokesperson and advocate N Bupenda Meitei has firmly disassociated himself from the swirling controversy surrounding an alleged audio leak involving former Chief Minister N Biren Singh. On Friday, Meitei issued a statement repudiating any connection to the case, asserting he is neither the legal counsel for the petitioners nor involved in any capacity. This public clarification comes on the heels of a flurry of social media rumors inaccurately identifying him as the petitioners’ attorney in the volatile case, which has sparked widespread online threats.
The rumors targeting Meitei’s involvement spread rapidly across social platforms, prompting several accounts to openly threaten him. In response, the Congress spokesperson took swift and decisive legal action. On Thursday, he filed a series of formal complaints, personally reaching out to key authorities, including the Governor of Manipur, the Chief Secretary, and the Director General of Police (DGP), seeking assurance for his safety and clarification to detach his name from the allegations. “I visited Raj Bhavan, the Chief Secretary’s residence, and the DGP’s office urging them to protect my life and property and ensure my detachment from this case,” Meitei told The Assam Tribune. He highlighted that certain social media accounts affiliated with the BJP were instrumental in propagating these false claims.
Escalating his actions on the matter, Meitei announced his intent to address higher authorities, including the President, Prime Minister, and Chief Justice of India, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. He stressed the potential for unrest in a region already under the sensitive atmosphere of President’s Rule. The Congress leader expressed his desire for peace alongside the urgent need for protection amidst these unfounded allegations.
When approached for comment, BJP representatives denied any connection to the circulating misinformation. Kh Ibomcha Singh, the spokesperson for BJP Manipur, dismissed the allegations as “100 percent wrong,” while BJP Vice President N Nimbus asserted the party’s lack of knowledge regarding the rumors.
Amid the fallout from these rumors, the alleged audio leak case involving N Biren Singh remains sub-judice, presently under the consideration of India’s Supreme Court. Meitei clarified the situation, referencing that a private individual had filed the case with the Union of India listed as the respondent. “A ‘sealed envelope’ report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory is ready,” he noted, implying forthcoming developments in the judicial process.
Highlighting the essential principle of judicial independence, Meitei underscored that the matter is receiving due oversight from the Supreme Court and urged that the legal process be permitted to unfold without interference. “There are many cases pending in courts, but to wrongfully link someone to a particular case and incite violence is both unconstitutional and illegal,” he concluded, reinforcing the necessity for adherence to legal norms.
This unfolding saga underscores the intricate interplay of regional politics and social media influence, spotlighting the challenges of maintaining factual integrity in the digital age. As tensions simmer, the clarifications and denials emphasize the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Manipur’s political discourse.
