In March 2025, travelers venturing to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad witnessed a significant protest by cab drivers, highlighting the long-standing issue of low wages among gig workers. These workers, employed across various sectors like food delivery and package services, stand to benefit from enhanced social security measures, improved employment conditions, and strengthened health and safety regulations as outlined in the draft bill. A key feature of the draft legislation is the creation of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Welfare Board, which will oversee the registration of both workers and aggregators, ensure compliance with social security contributions, and manage the distribution of benefits.
To facilitate swift resolution of disputes, the bill proposes that grievances related to pay deductions, job terminations, and contract breaches can be raised with the company’s Internal Dispute Resolution Committee. Furthermore, the appointment of a Grievance Redressal Officer by the government will allow registered workers to report issues regarding their entitlements, social security payments, and other benefits directly to the officer. This mechanism promises a more transparent and fair system for addressing the concerns of gig workers.
The government of Telangana, under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, has taken proactive measures to incorporate feedback from relevant stakeholders. The draft bill, accessible on the Telangana Labour Department’s website, invites suggestions and comments until April 28, 2025. The government aims to enact this legislation on May 1, coinciding with International Labour Day, reinforcing its commitment to improving the conditions for gig and platform workers across the state.
