Delta CEO Gifts Free Flights to Employees Amidst CrowdStrike-Microsoft Turmoil: An Unbelievable Act of Generosity
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian addressed employees on Friday, expressing gratitude for their efforts during last month’s severe disruptions caused by a failed CrowdStrike software update. The incident left thousands of customers and crew stranded, as Delta canceled more than 5,000 flights between July 19 and July 24, more than their annual cancellations in 2019, and cost the company around $500 million, about 40% of its second-quarter profit.
Bastian announced that employees would receive two free travel passes as a token of appreciation. However, the Delta organizing committee of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA criticized the offer, stating it fails to address the operational flaws and calling for more substantial changes. During the disruptions, more than 4,000 flight attendants picked up over 6,100 trips with extra pay.
Delta faced significant recovery challenges compared to competitors, with crews manually resetting 40,000 servers. The operational fiasco has prompted the U.S. Department of Transportation to investigate, led by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. The airline, known for its reliability, is now working on processing thousands of refunds and reimbursements.
To mitigate losses, Delta plans legal action against CrowdStrike and Microsoft, hiring law firm Boies Schiller Flexner for the case. While Microsoft has declined to comment, CrowdStrike stated they have no knowledge of a lawsuit.
