Wankhede’s Iconic Divecha Pavilion Renamed After legendary Cricket Star Rohit Sharma
Mumbai Cricket Association Conclave Reinforces Commitment to Cricket Development
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) successfully concluded its 86th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday, reiterating its dedication to the growth and promotion of cricket in Mumbai. The conclave marked a momentous occasion, filled with significant announcements and tributes to cricketing legends.
One of the most awaited decisions from the AGM was the naming of a pavilion at the iconic Wankhede Stadium after Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. This honor recognizes Sharma’s remarkable cricketing career, which includes 19,700 runs in 499 matches, an impressive average of 42.18, and a record-breaking 49 centuries and 108 half-centuries. The MCA further acknowledged Sharma’s leadership, which has led India to victories in the ICC T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy.
The Wankhede Stadium’s Divecha Pavilion Level 3 will now be known as the “Rohit Sharma Stand,” receiving unanimous approval from the gathering. Moreover, other prominent stands within the stadium will bear new names, including the Grand Stand Level 3, which will be designated as the “Shri Sharad Pawar Stand,” and Grand Stand Level 4, renamed as the “Ajit Wadekar Stand.” This proposal was initially moved by Milind Narvekar and seconded by Jitendra Awhad, garnering full support from the attendees.
In a bid to bolster grassroot cricketing infrastructure, the MCA announced a substantial increase in the financial corpus for affiliated clubs. The fund has been elevated to ₹75 crore, with plans to scale it further to Rs 100 crore in the near future. This investment aims to strengthen foundational cricket programs across the city, according to an official release.
The meeting also paid tribute to Amol Kale, former president of MCA, by renaming the match day office at the MCA Pavilion to the “MCA Office Lounge – In Memory of Amol Kale.” This honor recognizes Kale’s significant contributions to Mumbai cricket, leaving a lasting legacy.
The Mumbai Cricket Association’s AGM marked a significant milestone, solidifying its commitment to the development and promotion of cricket in Mumbai. With its focus on grassroots development and honoring cricketing legends, the MCA is set to continue its journey in fostering a thriving cricketing ecosystem in the city.
