Bhupen Borah Scorches Assam CM’s Silence Amid BJP Leaders’ Nalbari Verbal Slugfest
Assam Congress Chief Hits Out at CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Over BJP Leaders’ Clash
A heated verbal altercation between two senior BJP leaders in Assam has sparked a fresh controversy, with Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Borah launching a scathing attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The incident, which occurred during the inauguration of the Bahjani Mandal Office in Nalbari on Tuesday, April 15, has exposed deep-seated divisions within the BJP, according to Borah.
In a scathing social media post on the platform ‘X’, Borah attributed the clash between BJP Assam State President Dilip Saikia and Cabinet Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah to long-standing internal conflicts within the party. Borah pointed to simmering tensions between factions aligned with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and those loyal to what he terms "syndicate leaders". This intra-party spat has been brewing beneath the surface for some time, Borah claimed.
Borah’s post also targeted CM Sarma, accusing him of exhibiting "double standards". The Congress leader pointed out that the Chief Minister has shown no qualms about arresting common citizens, journalists, and Congress spokespersons in the name of maintaining law and order. In contrast, Sarma remained noticeably silent when confronted by his own party’s state president, Borah wrote. "You consider your chair more important than your self-respect," he explicitly stated, adding a barb aimed directly at Sarma.
This latest outburst from the Assam Congress leader comes as the state is gearing up for the 2023 Assembly elections. The BJP, led by Sarma, has been experiencing internal tensions and factional rivalries, which have only intensified following the much-publicized clash between Saikia and Mallabaruah.
The incident has sparked intense debate and speculation about the potential impact on the ruling party’s prospects ahead of the polls. As the opposition, the Congress appears to be capitalizing on these divisions, particularly following Borah’s bold attack on Sarma. The Chief Minister, however, still maintains a commanding lead in public opinion polls, reflecting widespread loyalty to his leadership among party rank-and-file. Today, the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly has submitted the election schedule for five by-polls.
